Abstract

This study aimed to compare effectiveness and safety between pulmonary vein antrum isolations (PVAI) using 12 channels open irrigated 4 mm-tip (OIT) and non-irrigated 8 mm-tip ablation catheters (NIT). Ipsilateral PVAI was performed using NavX in 17 patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). Each side PV antrum was alternatively isolated either by a non-irrigated 8 mm-tip ablation catheter (Fantasista, Japan Life Line Co., Ltd.) with 30–35 W for 30 seconds (17 PVs) or an open irrigated 4 mm-tip ablation catheter with proximal 6 and distal 6 irrigation channels (Cool Path Duo, SJM Co., Ltd.) with 25–30 W for 30 seconds and a flow rate of 13–20 ml (17 PVs) in a random fashion. All PV antra were successfully isolated with the procedure and fluoroscopic times of 194±36 minutes and 19.0±3.5 minutes, respectively. No complication occurred. There was no difference in fluoroscopic and procedure times, number of energy application, total energy and circumference of PV antrum between one-side PVAIs using OIT and NIT although maximal catheter tip temperature was lower (37.4±1.8 vs 49.3±2.1 degree) and maximal impedance was higher (107±10 vs 94±11 ohm) in OIT ablation than those in NIT ablation. In conclusion, PVAI using OIT is as effective and safe as that using NIT.
