Abstract
In this study, which was designed to investigate potential differences between the self-perceived personality characteristics of male and female art students and those of male and female students in two other academic majors, Adjective Check List (ACL) scale scores of 192 students were analyzed. All of the students were in graduate programs. Sixty were studying studio art, 64 were studying English, and 68 were studying psychology. Multivariate analyses of variance were performed on the ACL scale scores revealing significant differences (p < .000) between the male and female art students. The female art students, rather than the male, claimed tendencies to seek change for the sake of pleasure and to be competitive and aggressive.
