Abstract

The correlation between methanol electro-oxidation activity and surface structure of Pt-decorated Ru nanoparticles (Pt@Ru core-shell nanoparticles) and Ru-decorated Pt nanoparticles (Ru@Pt core-shell nanoparticles) was investigated. PtRu core-shell nanoparticles with different ratios of the core to shell were prepared by successive reduction. The core-shell structure was characterized by XRD and CO adsorption probe techniques. The electrocatalytic activity was analyzed by cyclic voltammetry. The maximum activity of Pt@Ru core-shell toward methanol electro-oxidation is 3:1 while the maximum activity of Ru@Pt core-shell is 1:2. Both samples contain Ru about 33% and Pt about 67% on the surface. Ru@Pt nanoparticles exhibited higher catalytic activity than Pt@Ru nanoparticles due to the difference in electronic promotion at interface.
