Abstract
This paper studies first the current and future situations of energy consumption in urban areas in Japan, and many technological problems are pointed out related to energy conservation systems. Next, picking up some essential technologies which are indispensable to plan better energy systems for multifunctional cities, fundamental strategies are proposed for realizing energy conservation in total energy supply and consuming systems. Lastly, the combined heat and power generation plant for district heating and air-cooling is particularly selected as one of key energy saving technologies, and various types of plant systems are compared from the standpoints of both energy efficiency and supply cost.
