Abstract

IRI electron density profiles with two options used for the F-layer thickness factor B 0 are compared with those from a theoretical model for middle ionosphere. Compared to theory IRI profiles are thicker particularly by day for the Gulyaeva B 0 model and by night for the standard B 0 that agree with theoretical profiles in equinox and summer months for low solar activity. Our theory shows that the altitude of the half maximum electron density is nearly at the level of maximum gradient.
