Abstract

The study is focused on the evaluation of the performance of Thematic Mapper data from LANDSAT and High Resolution Visible from SPOT applied to the land use mapping in a miditerranean area located in the south of France. SPOT 1 and LANDSAT data are evaluated by digital processing (computation of vegetation index, supervised classification) for selected forest and sub-forest types. Comparison of the numerical analysis of these data illustrate the important improvements in resolution expected when SPOT was launched. Based on our analysis of suprevised classifications, the optimum combination of TM and HRV data for discriminating forest and sub-forest cover types is X2-X3-TM5 bands. This combination uses optimum spatial and spectral properties of the sensors.
