Abstract
A study of the histogenesis of 276 malignant skin melanomas (including 70 early stage cases) has shown that the outward appearance of the tumor depends on its origin and that different histogenetic types of malignant skin melanoma have different prognoses. Malignant skin melanomas originating from junctional melanoblasts are characterized by a more favorable course, while those originating in the derma from intradermal, neurinomatous and blue nevus cells usually have a poor prognosis.
