Abstract

SUMMARYChromosomes were counted in the preparations of gonads and gills from the two species Nerita polita and Nerita albicila collected from rocky shore on the Red Sea in Upper Egypt. Nerita polita has a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 22, with 7 chromosome pairs of metacentrics, 3 pairs of submetacentrics and one pair of subtelocentric, while Nerita albicila has a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 24, with 7 chromosome pairs of metacentrics, 2 pairs of submetacentrics and three pairs of acrocentrics. No clear indication of sex chromosomes was found neither in somatic or in the germinal cells. These results are reported for the first time in Egypt.
