Abstract
ONLY a meager amount of research work has been done that was concerned with the gonadotropic potency of the pituitary glands obtained from the domestic fowl. Witschi, Stanley, and Riley (1937) have assayed turkey hypophyses, and Domm (1931), Leonard (1938), Jaap (1935), Stein (1934), and Meyer, Mellish, and Kupperman (1939) have made gonadotropic assays of various classes of chickens. Unfortunately there was a wide variation in the assay technics used by these workers so it is difficult to make a concise comparison of the experimental results.This study was undertaken to determine the gonadotropic potency of pituitary glands taken from all types of domestic poultry using the same standard assay technic and to determine the influence of sex, age, and different stages of reproduction on this potency.
