Abstract

A compact asymmetric 1 ? 2 multimode interference (MMI) optical switch is fabricated with organic/inorganic hybrid materials. The device has asymmetric output channels with respect to a paired-interference MMI to reduce the device size while maintaining its property of low crosstalk. The optical switch has an MMI waveguide length of only 2.0?mm. The crosstalk at both the 'on' state and 'off' state is less than ?22?dB for TE and TM modes at 1550?nm.
