Abstract
This chapter considers implications arising from the 'participatory turn' that has characterised recent advances in the methods applied by researchers working within the critical gerontology tradition. Drawing on evidence from a participatory project in England, the authors encourage critical gerontologists to reflect upon issues around empowerment and the role of the production of gerontological knowledge in the social construction of ageing. Whilst acknowledging the challenges associated with the application of participatory methods, it is argued that participatory approaches can support gerontological researchers to maintain a radical consciousness to address effectively social inequalities and social justice in dialogue with older people themselves.
