Abstract

A veteran in the clinical engineering field, Alan Gresch is the new assistant vice president of capital equipment services for Alexian Brothers Health System in Arlington Heights, IL. A married father of six, Gresch has eight grandchildren. What attracted you to clinical engineering?I had an interest in electronics in high school and a desire to get into a healthcare-related field. It was a perfect fit! What's your proudest professional accomplishment?I led a team of devoted professionals that transformed a segregated group of disparate clinical engineering departments into a cohesive team of over 100 that brought in-house all of the specialized high cost services. What's the biggest challenge facing healthcare technology management professionals today? The biggest challenge is becoming all that we are capable of being without fear, but with confidence. Grabbing hold of the tremendous opportunity that economics and healthcare reform presents and transforming our profession to be exactly that: a profession. What is the best career advice you ever got?Do not be duplicitous. You can't be one way in one part of your life and a different way in another part of your life and expect it to work. What would you tell a recent graduate looking for a job in healthcare technology? You could not have possibly come into this profession at a better time. Aside from being held up as one of the top professions in recently published reports, there is more opportunity right now—as long as you are willing to work hard and take some risks—than has ever existed in my 30-plus year career. What's the one habit you'd like to break? Those who know me well understand that I have a propensity to use some colorful language. My wife tells me often I'm way too intelligent to talk that way. As always, she's right!Who's your hero and why?Vince Lombardi. In addition to coaching my home team, the Green Bay Packers, to countless championships, he had a deep faith and a desire to raise men to a higher level. His philosophies apply as much to success in business and life as they did to football. What place in the world would you most like to visit?Alaska. My wife and I are actually planning a cruise and extensive land excursion there next year. What's one thing about you that others might be surprised to learn? Why?I always enjoy the looks on people's faces when they learn I have six kids and eight grandkids. Most of them say I don't look old enough to be a grandpa. What is your philosophy towards life in 10 words or less?Do the best you can always and serve others passionately.
