Abstract

Nowadays, there is a serious confrontation between liberalism and communitarianism. Civic education based on liberalism considers freedom as the educational goal, while civic education based on communitarianism considers virtue as the educational goal. Freedom and virtue are compatible in the common life. But in a case where priority is required, the emphasis must be laid on virtue. Love and friendship are the means to overcome excessive individualism. Individuality and community must be dialectically balanced to produce a good polity. Communitarian civic education can approximate to the ideal polity. Returning to Aristotle's friendship and Rousseau' love may invoke the sentiment of oneness from the heart of our species.
