Abstract
In the context of the current civil Air Traffic Services, the transfer of information between aircraft and the ground is mainly handled by radiotelephony exchanges. The lack of air/ground digital communications is a shortcoming that prevents further automation of functions in the ATS systems. To face this problem, two air/ground digital communications systems are under study, and the international standardisation process is going on at the International Civil Aviation Organisation. These systems are on the one hand a conventional telecommunication satellite system, and on the other hand an enhancement of the current secondary radar system, the mode-S. This paper presents an overview of the state of the art for these systems, as well as the projects of the french Direction de la Navigation Aérienne for introduction of air/ground data-link.
