Abstract
The following chapter will first deal with asynchronous and synchronous message and communication systems. Asynchronous communication may be used in situations where people have a shared task but they do not work simultaneously on it. There are no real-time requirements. Examples of these group-ware systems are information exchange, distance learning or bulletin boards. The architecture and functionality of a typical email system will be discussed. Further attention will be directed towards synchronous communication as exemplified by video conferences.
