Abstract
Foden (1986) presents an account of the petrology of Tambora volcano, with emphasis on the great explosive eruption of 1815. A comprehensive volcanological and petrologic study of Tambora is long-overdue and, in this regard, we welcome Foden's paper. However, there are several points of the work that we wish to bring to the reader's attention, especially Foden's conclusion that the 1815 magma body was overpressured by 4 kbar prior to eruption. Our discussion here will concentrate on 3 major points: (a) the validity of field data and its interpretation supportive of a large pre-eruption overpressure; (b) the nature of the samples of 1815 material presented by Foden; (c) the petrological treatment.
