Abstract

ABSTRACT There is a rich history of research examining the racial/ethnic disparities in school safety, school discipline, school climate and school achievement. While rich and informative, these lines of inquiry also unearth additional unanswered questions. As scholars consider the future of school safety research, they should consider: 1) developing more comprehensive approaches to school safety that include interventions aimed at improving school safety while being mindful of the implementation of these interventions with an eye toward unintended consequences and potentially disparate impacts; 2) increase the number of researcher practitioner partnerships to co-create interventions; 3) increase the cadre of teachers of color and scholars of color who can bring diverse thoughts and perspectives to identification of problems and solutions to school safety concerns; and 4) that relationships matter and it is important to plan for transitions.
