Abstract

• The proposal of Papp et al. (2021) [1] to use laser wake field for ion acceleration is wrong because only electrons can be accelerated this way. • The probability of fusion reaction in counter propagating beams is so small that no energy surplus can be obtained. • Even if all colliding ions will fuse, the energy gain of ∼20 MeV per colliding pair is 500 times smaller than the energy of two colliding ions of 10 GeV. • The numerical simulations of the proposal do not show either laser wake field generation or ion acceleration.
