Abstract

I A RECENT NOTE in the Readers' Forum, 1 Mr. Summers pointed out that the expression for the apparent additional mass of a cylinder with symmetrical wings and unequal vertical fins translating along its unsymmetrical axis can be expressed as an algebraic function of its dimensions instead of a function containing elliptic integrals as given in my paper. I t can be shown that his expression is a simplification of my Eq. (34); my oversight in not simplifying the expression was due to the fact that the function G*(\, ju) defined by Eq. (8) in Appendix (1) can only be expressed in terms of elliptic integrals, whereas G(\, fx) = G*( ju) + G*(JU, X) can be expressed simply as
