Comment on “Roles of Hydration and Magnetism on the Structure of Ferrihydrite from First Principles”

Abstract

Sassi and Rosso asserted to have rediscovered the akdalaite model for the structure of ferrihydrite using ab initio calculations. Here, we show that the predicted polyhedral structure and magnetic properties of the lowest enthalpy model correspond to those of proto-maghemite, not ferrihydrite. The demonstration is made by compiling results published in ten key articles by six independent research groups, all of which were overlooked by the authors of the commented article.
