Abstract

We examine the structure of the second-order distorted-waves Born approximation amplitude for the two-nucleon ( α, d) transfer reactions. It is found that the sign of the interference between simultaneous and sequential transfer amplitudes cannot depend upon the value of the total angular momentum transfer J within the context of the model that is usually assumed. This contradicts calculations reported recently for the ( α, d) reaction. Since the observed cross sections do show an even-odd dependence on J, we conclude that the usual model is inadequate.
