Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the effects of the economic crisis in Spain on the practice of eating out. We analyze how the crisis has changed the extradomestic food expenditure, but also how it has changed the practice this food custom. The work is based methodologically on the use of secondary sources and results of 50 in-depth interviews the persons responsible of households performed at five Spanish cities of different population sizes. The results show that the expenditure on eating out in Spain has decreased during the worst years of the economic crisis, but this food behavior can not be explained only in terms of budget. The Spaniards try to maintain this habit to practice extra-food alternatives in order to hold on the effects of the crisis. This is because eating out is an important component of sociability that refuse to eliminate work or leisure reasons.
