Abstract

Abstract To study the pool fire combusting phenomenon, experiments in experimental compartment with an internal size of 1.8×1.2×1.2 m3 was conducted. The principle of the influence from vent opening size and pool fire area upon combusting mass loss rate, compartment temperature and air flow at horizontal opening was researched and the internal connection between fire shape and flow pattern was provided. The result showed that vent opening size had major impact on opening air flow pattern. With the vent opening size increased, the air flow amount through opening into the compartment augmented. Yet it hardly influenced burning rate. Meanwhile, the change of opening size scarcely influenced compartment temperature, which was much affected by fire shape. The change pattern of average compartment temperature by fire source area was nearly linear increase.
