Abstract

Abstract To study the combustion phenomena of pool fire in a ceiling vent compartment where vent is far away from the fire source, experiments in cabin with a size of 1.8m×1.2m×1.2m were conducted. The influence of ceiling vent size and pool fire source area upon mass loss rate, compartment temperature and gas exchange pattern at vent was researched. The internal connection between flame shape and vent flow pattern was provided. The result showed: ceiling vent size had major impact on vent flow pattern. As the ceiling vent size increased, the air flow into the compartment through vent augmented, either. Yet it had little impact on combustion rate. In the meantime, the change of vent size affected compartment temperature in a small scale, which was much more implicated by the change of fire source size. The average compartment temperature increased linearly according to the fire source area.
