Abstract

AbstractThe combustion and detonation properties of formulations containing ammonium perchlorate (AP) and phosphorus(V) nitride, P3N5, CAS−No. [12136‐91‐3] were investigated. A stable ambient pressure combustion regime is found for compositions containing between 20–65 wt.‐% P3N5consolidated to 53–77 % theoretical density. A balanced formulation (AP/P3N5: 68.38/31.62 wt.‐%) is insensitive to friction, about as sensitive to impact as pure AP and does not detonate at 77 % TMD when subjected to the shock from a Comp A4 (RDX/wax) booster charge. Annular charges containing pure P3N5 or AP/P3N5: 68.38/31.62 wt.‐% placed around a cylindrical Comp A4 (RDX/Wax) core do not contribute to the blast pressure of the charge.
