Abstract
Biological and physical controls as eco-friendly methods are being pursued actively to manage postharvest diseases. Postharvest gray mold is one of the major causes of significant economic losses for kiwifruit industry. Effects of the biocontrol yeast Meyerozyma guilliermondii and UV-C to control gray mold and natural infection on kiwifruit were determined in this study. M. guilliermondii or UV-C as an individual treatment inhibited gray mold and natural infection development. The combined treatment of M. guilliermondii and UV-C provided greater control efficacy than each individual treatment. The growth of M. guilliermondii in fruit wounds was not negatively impacted by UV-C. The analysis at the molecular and physiological levels showed that M. guilliermondii and UV-C alone or in combination induced defensive gene expression and total phenolics in kiwifruit. The disease resistance response induced by UV-C may partially contribute to enhancement in the biocontrol effectiveness of M. guilliermondii on kiwifruit. Taken together, these findings suggested that the hurdle technology combining biocontrol and physical controls may represent a promising method to manage gray mold on kiwifruit.
