Abstract

This case study analyzes the global problem of plastic packaging waste through the lens of U.S. supermarket chain Publix. Although Publix has an active corporate social responsibility program and well-documented sustainability practices, its efforts to date on reducing plastic waste have been limited, particularly in comparison to European grocery chains. The case considers steps that Publix might take to reduce plastic waste and meet its obligations to external stakeholders. These steps include everything from eliminating the use of plastic bags to implementing a return and reuse system for plastic bottles and containers.
