Abstract

„Trajan's Column”, the magazine founded by Bogdan Petriceicu Hașdeu in 1870, has been contributing to improving the cultural level of its readers for almost a decade. The profile of the magazine has changed over time, after only a few years the political articles giving way to cultural controversies with Titu Maiorescu and his protégés promoted in „Literary Conversations”. However, beyond the dispute with the Junimists, politicians and the monarchy, the magazine has constantly promoted folk creations and cultured literature. Special attention was paid to history and linguistics as „Trajan's Column” became a cultural and scientific journal. Many pages have been dedicated to historical studies, etymological analysis, document editing. There is no lack of articles with medical and economic content, or information about the scientific projects of Romanian and foreign historians and linguists. At the same time, the readers were informed about the new editorials, as well as the quality of the most recent specialized works, which are the subject of competent reviews. „Trajan's Column” was a reference magazine in the Romanian publishing landscape in the modern era, cultivating the interest of contemporaries for the historical past, but also for literary creations.
