Abstract
This paper is an appraisal of the process of carrying out an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) of the experiences of fathers with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) for submission for a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. My aim in writing this account is to critically reflect on the process and in particular to explore issues of validity. I will give particular emphasis to researcher reflexivity, both epistemological and personal, as advocated by Willig (2008). It is my hope that this account may be useful to others embarking upon or grappling with IPA studies or indeed other studies utilising other qualitative methodologies. The content of the critical appraisal is drawn predominantly from the reflective research journal I maintained throughout the process, and relevant literature.
