Abstract

Can we safely say that there is no new interaction scale to be found below about 1015GeV, that the behaviour of the coupling constants can be happily extrapolated to the Planck energy (10l9GeV) and that quarks, intermediate bosons, leptons and Higgs particles remain structureless and pointlike down to 10-3lm? These are three assumptions of recent 'grand unified theories' (GUTS) that take their cue from quantum chromodynamics (QCD).
