Abstract

A new di-Schiff base colorimetric sensor, 4-(Anthracen-9-ylmethylene-hydrazonomethyl)-benzene-1,3-diol (coded as AHB), possessing anthracene and 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde as fluorophore and receptor, respectively, has been reported. The sensor AHB is capable of naked eye detection of Hg2+ ions and detection of Cu2+ and Al3+ ions via two different fluorescence mechanisms in HEPES buffered CH3OH: H2O (9: 1) solvent system. The sensor witnessed high selectivity towards all the three ions in the presence of various other metal ions. The quantitative detection limit of Hg2+ ions was calculated to be 2 μM; while it was 2.07 and 1.29 μM for Cu2+ and Al3+ ions, respectively.
