Background and Aim: Toothbrushing can potentially abrade the teeth and direct and indirect dental restorations, and may also affect their color. This study aimed to as-sess the color change (∆E) of Ceramill Zolid FX following abrasion with/without toothpaste in two groups of simultaneous and separate staining and glazing. Materials and Methods: This in vitro, experimental study was conducted on 40 cylindrical specimens measuring 2 x 10 mm fabricated from Ceramill Zolid FX by the computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing technology. The samples were randomly divided into four groups (simultaneous and separate staining and glazing) and subjected to simulation of 3, 6 and 9 years of toothbrushing in a cross-brushing machine with and without toothpaste. The ∆E of specimens was measured before and after the intervention by using Shade Pilot spec-trophotometer, and compared using the Mann-Whitney and Friedman tests (al-pha=0.05). Results: Significant differences were noted in ∆E of simultaneous staining and glazing control (without toothpaste) and intervention (with toothpaste) groups over time (both P=0.000). Both the control and intervention subgroups in separate staining and glazing group also showed significant differences in ∆E over time (both P=0.000). Conclusion: The results showed greater color change over time in simultaneous stain-ing and glazing group due to the presence of one layer of stain and glaze, compared with separate staining and glazing. The effect of toothpaste on color change was only significant at 9 years in both simultaneous and separate staining and glazing groups.

INTRODUCTIONThis in vitro study investigated the effects of two types of smokeless tobacco (ST), black shammah and DZRT snuff, on the mean color stability (ΔE**) and contact profilometry results (surface roughness [Ra]) of five Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) ceramic materials: feldspathic ceramics (VITABLOCS TriLuxe Forte and Mark II), multilayer zirconia (Ceramill Zolid PS), zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (VITA Suprinity), and lithium disilicate glass ceramic (IPS e.max CAD).METHODSA total of 100 specimens of VITABLOCS Mark II, Ceramill Zolid Multilayer PS, VITA Triluxe Forte, IPS e.max CAD, and VITA Suprinity were divided into two ST exposure subgroups, the black shammah and DZRT snuff groups. Samples underwent daily tobacco staining, thermocycling (5–55°C), and brushing simulation (10000 cycles). Color parameters (L*, a*, and b*) were measured by using a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade® Compact) at baseline and at one, two, and four weeks. ΔE** was calculated by employing the CIEDE2000 formula. Assessments with the VITA classical shade guide were employed to record shifts in the lightness/darkness of samples. Ra (μm) was assessed via contact profilometry at the end of the study. Statistical analyses included the Kruskal–Wallis, Mann–Whitney U, and chi-squared tests, with significance set at p<0.05.RESULTSAfter four weeks of immersion in DZRT snuff, IPS e.max CAD showed the highest ΔE** (6.718) among the tested materials, whereas Ceramill Zolid PS and VITABLOCS Mark II exhibited the lowest ΔE** values (0.614–1.075) across ST types and durations. Significant ΔE** differences were observed among ceramics (p<0.05), staining solution types (p<0.001 for IPS e.max CAD at four weeks), and immersion times (p<0.001). Assessments with the VITA classical shade guide showed that shades darkened significantly (p<0.05) after 2–4 weeks (p<0.05), with the prevalence of the A2 shade decreasing from 62% to 42% after exposure to black shammah and from 58% to 50% after immersion in DZRT snuff. Among materials, VITABLOCS Mark II had the lowest Ra (1.61–1.65 μm) and IPS e.max CAD had the highest (2.89–2.92 μm).CONCLUSIONSProlonged exposure to ST induced clinically significant color changes in IPS e.max CAD. Meanwhile, Ceramill Zolid PS and VITABLOCS Mark II demonstrated superior color stability over other materials. Material selection for ST users should prioritize zirconia or feldspathic ceramics to minimize aesthetic compromise.

Comparative Analysis of the Effects of Acidic and Alkaline Beverages on the Optical Properties, Surface Topography, and Bacterial Activity of Zirconia Materials

This study aimed to evaluate how acidic and alkaline staining solutions affect the optical properties (mean color change, ΔE*), geometric characteristics (surface roughness, Ra), and bacterial adhesion of zirconia Ceramill Zolid PS computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) material after 21 days of immersion. Ninety-six zirconia CAD/CAM Ceramill Zolid multilayer PS specimens were prepared and allocated to eight groups based on the pH values of the immersion solutions; the acidic solutions included Mirinda Citrus, CodeRed, yerba mate tea, Saudi coffee, and Nescafe (A–E), and the alkaline solutions included artificial saliva, DZRT (tobacco-free nicotine pouches), and smokeless tobacco (F–H). The specimens were immersed for 21 days at 37 °C, with the solutions replaced every 12 h to ensure consistency. Color changes were measured using a VITA Easyshade V spectrophotometer, and Ra was evaluated via white-light interferometric microscopy. The bacterial adhesion of Streptococcus mutans was quantified by counting colony-forming units (CFUs, CFU/mm2). Statistical analyses included the Shapiro–Wilk test for normality, one-way ANOVA with Tukey’s HSD post hoc test for group comparisons, and paired t-tests, with significance set at <0.05. The recorded pH values of the staining materials ranged from acidic (Mirinda Citrus: 3.23) to alkaline (smokeless tobacco: 8.54). Smokeless tobacco caused the most unacceptable mean color change (ΔE* = 6.84), followed by DZRT (ΔE* = 6.46), whereas artificial saliva produced the least discoloration (ΔE* = 2.15), with statistically significant differences among the solutions (p < 0.001). The Ra measurements varied significantly (p < 0.001), with Nescafe demonstrating the lowest value (0.486 µm) and DZRT the highest (0.748 µm). S. mutans adhesion was the highest for CodeRed (546.75 CFU) and the lowest for smokeless tobacco (283.92 CFU), demonstrating significant variation across groups (ANOVA, p < 0.001). The acidic and alkaline solutions significantly altered the optical properties, Ra, and bacterial adhesion of zirconia Ceramill Zolid PS CAD/CAM, with acidic solutions leading to higher bacterial adhesion.

Impact of Smokeless Tobacco on the Color Stability of Zirconia, Zirconia-Reinforced Lithium Silicate and Feldspathic CAD/CAM Restorative Materials: An In Vitro Study

WHO estimates that the global number of tobacco users exceeds 1.3 billion people. Few studies have examined the effect of locally made smokeless tobacco (ST) products on the color changes of material used in dental prosthetics. Bearing the recent advances in CAD/CAM ceramic restorations material in mind, this study aimed to assess ST influence on mean color change (∆E*) values among selected CAD/CAM ceramic types: multilayer zirconia (Ceramill Zolid PS), zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic (Vita Suprinity), and feldspathic (Vita TriLuxe) restorative materials. The color changes of the ceramics were compared to VITA classical and VITA 3D-MASTER shade guides. Sixty CAD/CAM ceramic specimens (20 samples each) were fabricated from Ceramill Zolid PS, Vita TriLuxe Forte, and VITA Suprinity. Specimens were prepared and divided into two groups according to the ST type and immersed for two weeks. Basic VITA classical and VITA 3D-MASTER colors were recorded at a baseline of one week and two weeks. The highest ∆E* values were recorded in the black ST for Vita Suprinity (4.77) in the first week, followed by Vita TriLuxe (4.07) in the second week. For white ST, Vita TriLuxe (4.87), and Vita Suprinity (4.42) showed extensive color change after two weeks and one week, respectively. The color change was least in zirconia for black and white ST after one week. CAD/CAM ceramic materials showed no significant difference after 1 and 2 weeks for the tested ST types. The effects of ST on CAD/CAM ceramic material (∆E* values) were high but did not reach clinically unacceptable values. Zirconia showed the least amount of color change among all the tested materials.

The Effect of Polishing, Glazing, and Aging on Optical Characteristics of Multi-Layered Dental Zirconia with Different Degrees of Translucency

(1) Background: Considering that the appearance of a dental material is an important factor that contributes to the success of prosthetic restorations. The purpose of this study is to investigate the optical properties and color changes among the layers of three commercial zirconias, to compare the aspect of the polished and glazed surfaces before and after aging and to evaluate the effects of hydrothermal degradation on their aesthetics. (2) Methods: Forty-eight plate-shaped samples were sectioned from presintered blocks of each multilayer translucent zirconia with different Yttrium content: Ceramill Zolid fx ML (5 mol%) = CeZ, STML (4 mol%) = STM, IPS e.maxZirCAD CEREC/in Lab MT Multi (4 mol% + 5 mol%) = IPZ. The samples were sintered according to the recommendation of each manufacturer, and half (24) of them were polished and the other half (24) glazed on one of the surfaces. Each type was equally divided into one control and one aging group, and, for each material, this resulted in four groups (n = 12): polished-control, polished-autoclaved glazed-control, and glazed-autoclaved. The artificial aging was carried out with an autoclave and distilled water at 134 °C, 0.2 MPa for 1 h, and for optical parameters (TP, CR, OP) and color change (ΔE*) measurements on a black and white background in a CIE L*a*b* color system, a spectrophotometer was used. The specimens were evaluated in incisal, cervical, and medium areas on polished and glazed samples before and after the aging stage. Statistical analysis was achieved with a two-way ANOVA test, the unpaired t-test, and the paired t-test. (3) Results: Before and after aging, the mean TP values for polished samples were higher than the glazed ones. After aging, the mean TP values increased for all groups (except polished CeZ), and significant differences were reported for polished STM, IPZ. After LTD, the opalescence registered an increase for almost all groups (except polished CeZ, polished and glazed IPZ—medium area), and significant differences were reported for almost all groups (except STM—incisal, IPZ—cervical, medium areas). The levels of color change were between extremely slight to perceivable. (4) Conclusions: Optical properties of the selected multilayer zirconia were influenced by polishing and glazing as surface treatment and affected by artificial aging (CeZ the least); perceivable color changes for polished STM, IPZ were detected.

Effect of ceramic thickness and resin cement colors on the final color of various monolithic CAD/CAM materials

PurposeTo assess the impact of resin cement color and the thickness of monolithic CAD/CAM materials on the final color of the fixed dental restoration.Materials and methodsFour high translucent monolithic CAD-CAM materials in shade A2, including lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max CAD, IP), monolithic zirconia (Ceramill Zolid HT+, CZ), two zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramics (VITA Suprinity, VS, and Celtra Duo, CD) were prepared as rectangular specimens measuring 12 × 14 mm in two thicknesses (0.5 mm and 1 mm), (N = 160, n = 20 per group). Subsequently, three different colors of PANAVIA™ SA(PV) Cement Universal Automix Universal (A2), White (W), and Translucent (Tr) polymerized resin cement specimens (12 × 14 × 0.2 mm) were placed underneath the ceramic samples. After and befor aging color values were measured. The color difference was calculated using CIEDE2000 formulae. Statistical analysis was conducted using a three-way ANOVA and EMF function with Bonferroni correction.ResultsThe 3-way ANOVA for the color difference data showed a statistically significant effect of all three main factors ceramic thickness, materials, and resin cement (p < 0.05). Among these, resin cement color had the most pronounced influence on color change (ηp² = 0.974). The most significant color change was observed with a thickness of 0.5 mm and white cement, with mean ∆E values ranging from 7.72 to 3.40. All ceramic groups, except for monolithic zirconia, exhibited color changes exceeding the clinically acceptable threshold (∆E ≤ 3.5). Additionally, all ceramic groups, except for monolithic zirconia, were affected by thickness.ConclusionThe study revealed that material type and cement group significantly influenced ∆E values in certain ceramics (CD, IP), while others (CZ+, VS) remained unaffected at 1 mm thickness. These findings highlight the importance of selecting appropriate cement color and type to optimize the final esthetics of monolithic restorations.

Effects of Khat on Surface Roughness and Color of Feldspathic and Zirconia Porcelain Materials under Simulated Oral Cavity Conditions

Background and Objectives: Khat chewing is considered as a daily habit that is practiced by more than five million people globally. The effect of khat chewing on the surface roughness and the color stability of natural teeth and the material used in the fabrication of dental prosthesis remains unknown. This study was conducted to explore and compare the effect of khat homogenate (KH) on the surface roughness (Ra) and the average color changes (ΔE*) amongst natural teeth and selected shades from different porcelain types, namely, feldspathic metal ceramic (MC) VM13, computer-aided design/computer assisted manufacture (CAD/CAM) feldspathic (Vitablocs Mark II), and multilayer zirconia (Ceramill Zolid PS) porcelains. Materials and Methods: Seventy samples were prepared from natural teeth, feldspathic MC, CAD/CAM Vitablocs Mark II, and zirconia porcelain. The Ra values were measured using a profilometer and expressed in micrometers, whereas the ΔE* values were measured using VITA Easyshade® V spectrophotometer for all samples before and after frequent immersion and thermocycling in KH for 30 days. The surface topography was used to assess the materials surfaces (glazed or polished) after KH immersion by using a white light interferometry machine. Results: Results revealed that the Ra and the ΔE* values of the different types of tested porcelain were influenced by KH. The order of surface roughness values was glazed or polished MC > polished Zircon > polished Vitablocs Mark II > natural teeth. The lowest ΔE* values were recorded for glazed Vitablocs Mark II and MC, and the values could be arranged as polished zircon > natural teeth > glazed zircon > polished MC > polished Vitablocs Mark II. P values were significantly varied (<0.001) among all the tested groups, except the zircon group (>0.05) for both Ra and ΔE*. Conclusions: KH significantly affected both surface parameter and color of glazed or polished porcelain materials and natural teeth.

Effect of Manual and Electronic Toothbrushes on Color Stability and Contact Profilometry of Different CAD/CAM Ceramic Materials After Immersion in Coffee for Varying Time Intervals

Aim: This study evaluated the effect of manual and electronic toothbrushes on the color stability (∆E*) and surface roughness (Ra) of four CAD/CAM ceramics after their immersion in coffee for 2 and 4 weeks. Methodology: A total of 160 specimens (Vitablocs Mark II, Ceramill Zolid zirconia, Vita Triluxe Forte, and IPS e.max CAD) were divided into four brushing subgroups (manual, sonic, oscillating–rotating, and ionic). The samples underwent daily coffee staining, thermocycling (5–55 °C), and twice-daily brushing. Color parameters (L, a, and b) were assessed and measured utilizing a spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade) at baseline, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks. ∆E* was calculated using the CIEDE2000 formula, and surface roughness (Ra, µm) was assessed via contact profilometry at the study’s conclusion. Data were analyzed using Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests (α = 0.05). Results: Among the tested samples, IPS e.max ceramic with manual toothbrushing exhibited the highest ΔE* values after 2 and 4 weeks (∆E* = 4.424 and ∆E* = 4.802) of immersion. Moreover, Ceramill Zolid zirconia demonstrated the highest ΔE* values with ionic brushing (∆E* = 4.883 at 2 weeks; ΔE* = 4.760 at 4 weeks). Significant differences were observed among ceramics and cleaning methods, with manual/ionic brushing causing the greatest changes (p &lt; 0.05). IPS e.max had the highest Ra with manual brushing (0.745–0.789 µm), whereas Ceramill Zolid zirconia with ionic brushing showed the highest Ra values among the electric methods (0.745–0.757 µm). Conclusions: Manual brushing induced clinically unacceptable color changes in IPS e.max CAD, whereas ionic brushing adversely affected Ceramill Zolid zirconia. All brushing methods increased surface roughness beyond acceptable limits.

The effect of in vitro aging on the color stability of cubic and tetragonal zirconia materials

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of artificial-accelerated aging (AAA) on the color stability of three types of monolithic cubic Zirconia materials of the third generation compared with tetragonal Zirconia materials of the first generation. Materials and Methods: A four groups of 10 disc-shaped specimens (10 mm × 1.2 mm) were made from the following CAD/CAM Zirconia blocks: first-generation Zirconia (Ceramill Zi LT) as a control, and three brands of third-generation Zirconia (Ceramill Zolid FX UT, Katana UTML, and Cercon XT) as the experimental groups. Ten discs from each group were subjected to the color measurement using a Spectrophotometer (Hunterlab, EasyMatch QC. Ver 4.90). Then, same discs were subjected to AAA for 3500 cycles. The data were analyzed with the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test. Data analyses were evaluated at a statistically significance level of P &lt; 0.05. Results: Statistically significant differences were detected in the L*, a*, and b* values among the four groups both before and after AAA. One-way ANOVA was used, which showed statistically significant differences among the groups ( P &lt; 0.001). The Ceramill ZI LT showed the greatest change in color (ΔE = 2.74 ± 0.23), followed by Katana UTML (ΔE = 1.91 ± 0.23), Ceramill Zolid FX UT (ΔE = 1.52 ± 0.43), and least change in color was seen in Cercon XT (ΔE = 1.44 ± 0.25). Tukey's post hoc test showed a statistically significantly difference among the test materials, except between Ceramill Zolid Fx UT and Cercon XT, where there was no significant difference seen in ΔE. Conclusion: The AAA protocols used in this study resulted in a significant effect in the (ΔE) of the four-tested Zirconia materials. The Ceramill ZI LT (First Generation) showed the greatest change in color and the least change in color was observed with Cercon XT (third generation). The color changes in all four tested Zirconia, though statistically significant was not a clinically perceivable

An In-Vitro Acidic Media Simulation of GERD and Its Effect on Machine-Milled Ceramics’ Optical Properties

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) exposes restorative materials to gastric acid, which may compromise their esthetic and optical properties. Limited evidence exists regarding the performance of different CAD/CAM ceramics under acidic challenges. Methods: Forty CAD/CAM ceramic discs were prepared (n = 10 per group): high-translucency zirconia (Z; Ceramill Zolid Gen-X), lithium disilicate (E; IPS e.max CAD), zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (S; VITA Suprinity), and hybrid ceramic (C; Cerasmart 270). Specimens were immersed in simulated gastric acid (0.06 M HCl, pH 1.2) at 37 °C for 96 h. Color difference (ΔE) and translucency parameter (ΔTP) were recorded before and after immersion using a spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA with Tukey’s post hoc test (α = 0.05). Results: All materials exhibited changes in color and translucency after acidic immersion. Group Z demonstrated the lowest ΔE values, indicating the best color stability, whereas group C showed the highest ΔE and a significant reduction in ΔTP. Groups E and S revealed moderate but clinically acceptable changes. Intergroup differences were statistically significant (p &lt; 0.05). Conclusions: Exposure to simulated gastric acid as in (GERD) resulted in measurable alterations in the optical properties of CAD/CAM ceramic materials. The extent of color change and translucency loss differed among the materials tested. High-translucency zirconia (Z) exhibited the greatest stability, while hybrid ceramic (C) showed the most pronounced changes. Zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (S) and lithium disilicate (E) demonstrated moderate alterations, falling between these two extremes.
