Abstract

We investigate by exact optimization methods the roughening of two-and three-dimensionalsystems of elastic lines with point disorder and hard core repulsion with open boundaryconditions. In two dimensions we find logarithmic behaviour whereas in three dimensionswe find simple random walk-like behaviour. The line ‘forests’ become asymptoticallycompletely entangled as the system height is increased at fixed line density due toincreasing line wandering.
