Abstract
How do isolated cells reach out collectively to remodel the environment in which they reside? We have known for some time that in certain processes, such as wound-healing, cells appear to act together, contacting one another through bands of remodeled collagen stretching over distances that are very long compared to the size of a cell (Fig. 1, left panel). We also know that fibroblasts act locally, synthesizing and remodeling extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins in response to signals that are only partially understood (Fig. 1, right panel).
