Abstract

For the first step of investigation of filtration mechanisms in membrane filters, the inertia-interception collection efficiency of a micro-perforated plate filter, such as a metallic perforated plate (MP) or a nuclepore filter (NPF), was calculated by assuming it to be an assembly of parallel pipes for various values of Reynolds number, Stokes number, porosity and interception parameter. Collection efficiency charts over the whole Re region were also prepared for convenient practical usage. The collection efficiencies of M P's and NPF's were measured for particles of polystyrene latex and stearic acid and compared with the calculated results. They agreed fairly well with each other, especially at low approach velocities, when neither particles nor filter were electrically charged.
