Annotation is an centuries old method of communicating, organizing, and synthesizing information that becomes increasingly valuable the more widely it is shared. This article examines the growing demand for collaborative annotation technologies in the academic community, tools and technologies that enable collaborative annotation, and various projects that have implemented it in public forums.
