Abstract

The feasibility of the cold processing of certain polymers has been demonstrated. Considering the process of the rolling of a polymer ring, the problems of pressure distribution at the roll-workpiece interface, roll force and roll torque have been analysed. The assumptions are that the process is similar to rolling with one of the unequal rolls driven under the constraints imposed by the compression, caused by the progressive decrease in radial thickness as the roll gap is reduced. The correctness of the yield criterion and flow rules used during the analysis have been verified experimentally. The results so obtained are discussed critically to illustrate the interaction of the different parameters involved and are presented graphically for a particular case of polymer ring rolling.
