Abstract

SUMMARYTetraploids of mulberry were produced by the treatment of young seedlings with 0.4 and 0.6% colchicine solutions for different durations. Maximum number of tetraploids were obtained with 0.4% solution for 9 hours.Tetraploids were also induced by bud treatment with 0.2% colchicine solution for 4 hours. Gigantism was observed in leaf, floral parts, pollen and stomata of induced tetraploids. Leaves were dark green, succulent and more pubescent. Pollen fertility and seed setting were lower. Meiotic irregularities in the induced tetraploids like formation of quadrivalents, trivalents and univalents, occurrence of laggards and unequal distribution of chromosomes to different poles were observed.Inspite of low fertility in auto-tetraploids it has been possible to raise a sizable population of expected triploids by tetraploid x diploid crosses.
