Abstract

Recent developments in the theory and methods of joint time–frequency analysis, coupled with limitations of separate time and frequency domain analyses, have sparked interest in the application of modern time–frequency methods for methods for machine monitoring. An overview of the theory and methods for Cohen–Posch time–frequency distributions (TFDs), and their applications to machine vibration analysis are presented. These TFDs clearly reveal time–frequency structure in machine vibrations that is related to the ‘health’ of the machine and which is difficult or impossible to discern with conventional methods.
