Abstract

Summary On the basis of a social learning theory analysis of the cognitive dissonance effect, it was hypothesized that locus of control would mediate attitude change in a forced compliance paradigm (N = 90 male and female college students). The classical cognitive dissonance effect was obtained when freedom of choice was stressed, but when locus of control was removed as a covariate, the effect disappeared. Results are discussed as suggesting the desirability of considering S variables in future attitude change research.
