Abstract
In this paper we study cofree coalgebras associated to arbitrary varieties of algebras. We give an explicit construction of such objects and extend, for certain homogeneous varieties, the known representations of cofree associative and absolutely nonassociative coalgebras in terms of infinite formal sums. Finally we use the given construction to obtain a shorter proof of the non local finiteness of cofree Lie coalgebras.
