Abstract

Burks reveals the background of efforts in the last nineteenth century to revise the unequal treaty status of Japan. He basis his story on a complete file of clippings and letters concerning an incident in 1887-88 from the William Elliot Griffis Papers at Rutgers. This folio is of historic interest because it sheds new light on very delicate Japanese-American diplomatic relations at the time.
