Abstract

For more than a century, charcoal has been known to be an almost universal adsorbent, capable of adsorbing an almost limitless variety of solids, liquids, or gases from liquid or gaseous solutions [1, 2]. Adsorption by charcoal occurs almost instantaneously, as demonstrated by the rapid decolorization of caramelized sugar solutions when passed through charcoal columns (column chromatography) or shaken with charcoal (batch separation).
