Abstract
Soil salinity is a huge problem in modern day agriculture. Salinity decreases crop productivity which needs immediate remedy as there is ever-growing demand for food grains. Genetic engineering based crop improvement strategies are useful in developing salinity resistant crops but they need in-depth knowledge of genetic circuitry. In this review the distribution of cis-regulatory elements related to miRNAs and their target genes involved in salinity stress responses have been reviewed and analyzed in rice plants. It was found that a common pattern exists for cis-regulatory elements for a co-ordinated regulation of gene expression during salinity stress. Therefore the present review has thrown light toward the co-ordination between cis-regulatory elements and miRNAs during salinity stress and knowledge gained through this could help in future crop improvement programs.
