Abstract

EpidemiologyGastric cancer remains being a serious sanitary problem although its global incidence is progressively declining. In fact, it is the second leading cancer worldwide. ClassificationThere are different histological types of gastric cancer but the most frequent type is the adenocarcinoma. AetiopathogenesisSeveral environmental factors have been identified to play an important role in gastric carcinogenesis, including Helicobacter pylori infection. Clinical manifestationsGastric cancer is usually asymptomatic and when symptoms appear it usually reflects an advanced disease. DiagnosisUpper endoscopy with biopsy sampling is considered the gold standard in gastric cancer diagnosis and can be complemented with additional imaging techniques such as endoscopic ultrasound or CT scan for tumor staging. TreatmentSurgery and endoscopic mucosal resection are the gold standard treatment for early stage gastric cancer. The best surgical technique and lymphadenectomy extension are in controversy. Other gastric tumorsThere are other histological types in gastric cancer that include lymphoma, carcinoid tumors and gastrointestinal stromal tumors that will be also reviewed in the present article.
