Abstract

Small cell lung cancer is a neoplasm characterized by its rapid doubling time, high growth fraction, and early development of generalized metastases. In the limited stage, the treatment of choice is a combination of cisplatin and etoposide along with concomitant radiotherapy. Although this tumor is initially highly sensitive to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the majority of patients have recurrence with broadly resistant disease in a few months or a year after initial therapy. In the disseminated stage, despite chemotherapy, overall survival is very short and very few patients survive for more than two years. The implementation of immunotherapy is an advance in the treatment of small cell lung cancer.
