Abstract

The Chemical Manufacturers Association (CMA) has announced a new basic research program aimed at assessing the safety of chemical products. The Arlington, Va.-based trade association says it spend $100 million over five years, focused on 10 critical environmental and health research areas. Top research priorities include exposure assessment, risk assessment, chemical carcinogenesis, endocrine disruption, and respiratory toxicity. The new initiative will stretch the bounds of current scientific knowledge and aid in the development of improved health and environmental safeguards, says CMA Chairman Arthur R. Sigel, who is president and chief executive officer of Velsicol Chemical Corp. There are fundamental questions that must be understood so our industry can move forward with greater certainty in product stewardship.
