Abstract

Clostridium difficile infection in patients with end stage renal disease. Is it preventable?

Highlights

  • Pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium difficile is one of the most leading causes of diarrhea among hospitalized patients [1]

  • It has been proven that C. difficile infections (CDI) in patients treated with renal replacement therapy (RRT), by hemodialysis, results in prolonged hospitalization, is usually more severe, increases mortality and significantly multiplies costs

  • These findings indicate the importance of comprehensive programs, aimed at reducing the use of unwarranted antibiotics

Summary

Introduction

Pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium difficile is one of the most leading causes of diarrhea among hospitalized patients [1]. Among the most vulnerable patients, both for hospital and community-acquired infections are those suffering from endstage renal disease (ESRD) [4]. It has been proven that CDI in patients treated with renal replacement therapy (RRT), by hemodialysis, results in prolonged hospitalization, is usually more severe, increases mortality and significantly multiplies costs. It may cause a serious problem and at the same time is calling for strategies to counteract its prevalence [4]
