Abstract
Opioids are an important component of multi-modal analgesia techniques. Different classes of analgesic drugs, when used concurrently, will modulate the pain pathway at different anatomical sites and receptor and transmitter systems, thereby providing more effective analgesia than a single class of drug alone. With few exceptions, combing different classes of analgesic drugs is not associated with increased risk of side effects, making multi-modal analgesia a safe and effective strategy to improve pain relief.
