Abstract

This book on in vitro fertilization is edited by two of the most prominent people in the field. Both carry responsibility for one of the most successful in vitro fertilization programs in the world—the Queen Victoria Medical Centre in Melbourne, Australia. However, contrary to some other books on the topic, this monograph does not restrict itself to the experience of one large center. With many contributors from some of the other highly successful Australian in vitro programs, this book, in fact, summarizes the Australian experience. And this is one of the major reasons why this monograph is a must for everybody interested in the subject of in vitro fertilization. In the preface, the editors correctly remind us that Edwards and Steptoe first described the technique of in vitro fertilization and, in Cambridge, later achieved the birth of the first two normal neonates.
